Patients with sexual infantilism due to permanent impairment of gonadotrophin secretion usually desire continuous therapy throughout adult life. Generally, sex steroid therapy is given.
Gonadotrophin therapy or GnRH therapy may be offered to patients with pituitary or hypothalamic defects, respectively, although such therapies are more expensive and more complex than sex steroid therapy. If fertility is desired, these forms of therapy can lead to the onset of sperm production or ovulation if the medications are administered on an appropriate schedule.
